At our August 13, 2024 Meetup, the topic was ‘burn testing’.
What’s a burn test? It’s a way to determine what fibres make up a fabric. If you’re like many of us and you shop at charity sales, or you buy deadstock fabric, or you’ve got fabric in your stash and you can’t recall when you bought it let alone what it was made of, a burn test can be helpful.
The attached resource guide from Threads Magazine gives good guidelines for performing burn tests and how to read the flame, ash, and what remains.
You know this but we’ll say it anyways, make sure you conduct your burn tests in a place that is safe and have necessary safety tools nearby – like a fire extinguisher or bowl of water.
